Safety tips:
If you use a kerosene heater in your home or workplace, you should take precautions against a number of dangers. A fire may be caused by the operation of a device too close to furnitures, curtains or other combustible, hitting a heater by accident, overflow when filling the tank.
An explosion can be caused by using the wrong type of fuel or operating the heater in an area where there are fuel vapors. Burns can be caused by direct contact with a radiator or ignition of clothing soaked with fuel. Children and pets should be kept at a safe distance from when operating heaters.
Kerosene heaters consume oxygen as they burn, when they are used in a small room or in a poorly ventilated area, oxygen in the air can be reduced to a dangerous level, a reduced oxygen supply could lead to incomplete combustion of fuel and the production of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas which in sufficient concentrations or if breathed for a period of time, can kill without warning. In addition to carbon monoxide, kerosene heaters can emit pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide, breathing these substances can create a risk, especially for people such as women pregnant asthmatics, people with cardiovascular disease, the elderly and young children, you should install CO detectors to alert you to dangerous levels of CO in an enclosed area where a kerosene heater is operated.
The use of kerosene heaters near furniture, carpets, or other combustible or flammable objects may result in fire, the use of fuels other than kerosene light grade K- 1 or the use of an apparatus of fuel can cause explosions. If you spill kerosene, clean immediately, especially, never leave the heater unattended, turn the heater off when you leave the area or if you go to sleep, never move it while it's being use.
Kerosene heaters could be particularly dangerous in rooms, especially when heaters designed to heat large spaces are used in small rooms, do not use flammable solvents, aerosol sprays.
